‘Sustainability’ is a term that gets bandied about in the fashion world, often without evidence or accountability. While more consumers are becoming alert to the devious practice of greenwashing—where brands and individuals present their business as sustainable, eco-friendly, or ‘green’, but such a denomination turns out to be at best an exaggeration and at worst an untruth in direct contradiction to reality.
One way to sort the wheat from the masquerading chaff? Checking for a brand’s B Corp certification—one that brands can only receive after undergoing an onerous testing process which finds them meeting “high standards of verified social and environmental performance, public transparency, and legal accountability to balance profit and purpose.”

Genuine sustainability for a brand isn't just about being environmentally friendly — it also means being socially conscious, engaging in fair trade and being able to account for every part of your production process.
